Support for Beginning Teacher Programs
The National Equity Project provides coaching and consulting services to Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) and related induction programs in districts and county offices of education to build effective coaching relationships between mentors and new teachers with an equity focus to develop and support high quality teachers in every classroom. This responsive service supplements curricula for the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) and BTSA Induction Program Standards, with a focus on translating equity standards and aspirations into effective action. All coaching and consulting is tailored to the needs of your program and the requirements of your district, county, or state. We also provide professional development workshops for new teachers.
The following video introduces one recent case of a partner BTSA program that worked with the National Equity Project on deepening the equity conversations between mentors (“support providers”) and new teachers and tying those conversations more clearly and effectively to support for improvements in teacher practice and student learning. We are honored and grateful that our coaching and tools were taken up by support providers with such passion and insight.

Teaching With A Cultural Eye
In working with mentors (“support providers”) or with new teachers directly, we offer professional development with our Teaching with a Cultural Eye (TCE) curriculum. TCE addresses the conceptual and socio-cultural underpinnings of teacher performance within a framework of learning partnerships, which encompass cultural proficiency, formative assessment, and student self-direction and growth mindset. Teaching with a Cultural Eye institutes provide an introduction to the major concepts and approaches, and longer customized engagements for schools, districts, and other partners are available.

Participants Say
- “Every school should go through this training. The opportunity to practice skills and reflect allowed me to internalize and own the experience ‘from the inside-out.’ I was reminded to stop and really listen to my students.”
Jill Lawrence, Teacher/Mentor, Gresham Middle School, Chattanooga, TN - “Your training helped Support Providers (SPs) to address inequities in classrooms as teachers focus on curriculum, procedures and recognizing individual bias toward students, staff and parents. Your training also provided SPs with valuable tools to assist with interrupting inequitable practices.”
