National Equity Project Brings Leading for Equity in Complex Systems Institute to Oakland

OAKLAND, CA (February 19, 2025) The National Equity Project, an Oakland-based national leader in educational transformation, leadership development and systems change, will host its Leading for Equity in Complex Systems Institute in Oakland on March 20-21, 2025, offering California leaders an opportunity to enhance their approach to systemic equity challenges.
The two-day intensive institute addresses a critical question facing schools and districts: Why do so many well-intentioned change efforts achieve limited success—or worse, produce unintended negative consequences?
"The biggest mistake when addressing systemic barriers is looking for simple solutions to complex problems," explains Mark Salinas, Managing Director at the National Equity Project. "This institute helps leaders understand how to approach complex challenges by bringing people together to find solutions that will work for their community."
"Leaders today face uncertainty at every turn," says LaShawn Routé Chatmon, Executive Director at the National Equity Project. "Uncertainty turns into opportunity when people focus on shared values and work together on behalf of children and families."
Drawing on over 30 years of experience coaching and leading in complex education systems, the National Equity Project designed this institute to help education leaders:
Understand complexity and its implications for equity work
Examine their leadership through a complexity lens
Learn frameworks and methods that expand approaches to leadership and change work
Participants will emerge better equipped to navigate complexity while leading initiatives in their organizations and communities. The institute provides concrete strategies for seeing challenges more clearly, understanding complex factors leading to current outcomes, and moving toward desired change.
